Heavy rain has caused major flooding in the Northern Territory communities of Kalkarindji, Daguragu and Pigeon Hole. 700 residents have been evacuated, airlifted to Katherine and then bused to evacuation centres at Howard Springs, near Darwin.
Baptist Mission Australia’s team members, Mat and Shannon and their young four children, live in Kalkarindji and serve the church and wider community through discipleship and leadership development. Shannon and Mat are among those evacuated and we give thanks that the family are safe and doing well.
In recent days, the Upper Victoria River reached over 16 metres, causing extensive damage to properties and infrastructure. Hundreds of people have lost everything, many without insurance, and whole communities have been devastated.
Given our long history of ministry in this part of the country, it is close to the hearts of Australian Baptists. As such, Baptist Mission Australia, in partnership with the Baptist Union of the Northern Territory and the Baptist Churches of South Australia, is seeking to support the long-term recovery effort.
Shannon and Mat are on the ground and have developed strong relationships with the local faith communities and leaders. They will be actively working with local people to holistically respond to the spiritual and practical needs of the community.
We invite you to support the flood recovery effort in two ways.
1. Make a financial gift which will go towards:
- Practical support for families and communities as they recover
- Costs associated with Mat and Shannon’s ministry, as they return to Kalkarindji to offer daily pastoral and practical support to community members
2. Pray with us
- Pray that during this devastating natural disaster, the local church can shine, sharing God’s love through word and practical action.
- Pray for Shannon, Mat, Kalkarindji-Daguragu Baptist Church and other First Nations believers as they journey with their community through this extremely challenging time.
Let’s stand with these First Nations communities as they grieve and face the extensive damage, significant clean up and long-term recovery.
