Project Code: MZwh606

In Northern Mozambique severe weather events are a common occurrence and rural schools are vulnerable to storm damage. Wind gusts can be so severe that roofs may be blown off school buildings and structures damaged. This project continues our partnership with the local Department of Education to assist them in providing safe and reliable repairs to two schools per year, for three years.

Many schools are built with whatever natural materials can be accessed. With limited resources, schools often remain in a state of disrepair after a storm or are required to use inferior materials for re-construction. This can lead to unsafe school environments for students and teachers. In these situations, they are forced to choose whether to stay open in often hazardous conditions or close.

Situations like this impact the effectiveness of education and are contributing to poor literacy rates for hundreds of children in Northern Mozambique, lower school attendance and teacher dissatisfaction.

Where there is a need, our team has partnered with their local Department of Education for many years and has provided reliable maintenance to ensure children and teachers have a safe environment for foundational education. This project reinforces relationships, continues to make the financial commitment possible, enables trust to continue to be built with the local government and communities, demonstrates our team’s commitment to this region and ultimately gives children access to a safe education.

If teachers feel supported and families feel safe to send children to school, there is greater satisfaction. This leads to improved learning outcomes. Education can change the course of a child’s life.

The cost of the school building rehabilitation is around USD $5,500 per school depending on sustained damage, availability of required materials and contractor fees for each situation. This figure has increased this year, due to increased fuel and building supply costs.

Join our team in coming alongside the district’s local government to make safe learning achievable for children in Northern Mozambique.
